What are post bases used for? 

Post bases are essential to the stability and longevity of structures, as all the loads of a structure are concentrated at the post bases. They also play a key role in protecting timber by keeping it away from rising damp and fungal attack. These critical components must therefore be securely fixed. Various solutions are available, and the choice depends on the type of installation required. The post base is usually specified by a structural engineering firm, which selects the most suitable model for the application.

Types of post bases 

- Bolt-down or embedded post bases
- Adjustable post bases
- Drive-in or ground screw post bases
- Heavy-duty post bases
- Bolt-down or embedded post bases

Installing post bases

There are two types of installation: bolt-down or embedded. The choice depends on the ground in which the post is installed. On existing concrete, a bolt-down post base is the best solution. In freshly poured concrete, embedding the base so that it is set into the concrete is the best solution. Simply mark the exact position and fix the base in place.

Adjustable post bases

Many post bases are adjustable, allowing you to set the post to the required height. This is essential for supporting landings or stairs, and it lets you level your surfaces as accurately as possible.

Adjustable post bases consist of two parts. The first is embedded in or bolted to the ground, and the second is screwed onto a threaded rod. This second part is also screwed to the timber post or welded to the metal post it supports.

A post base can, for example, support a deck, a pergola canopy or a conservatory.

Drive-in or ground screw post bases

There are also post bases that anchor into the ground in a less permanent way. Instead of an embedded base, you can choose one that is driven or screwed into the ground using a helical ground screw. This type of base is quick and easy to install.

Heavy-duty post bases

Very heavy loads require specific, suitable components. Post bases designed to support several hundred kilograms must be made of strong materials such as galvanised steel. Heavy-duty post bases are generally not adjustable.

There are also post bases designed for corner positions, so that the installation remains perfectly stable even in a corner.
