B.E. & W.R. Miller BuildLab, University of Miami

The B.E. & W.R. Miller BuildLab is a workshop built by and for the University of Miami's Department of Architecture. It gives students a place to take an architectural project from design through to construction, in real conditions.

The structure is open-air and built on a 40 by 40 foot concrete frame with a clear height of about 17.5 feet. Design/build studio students produced the furnishings as well as the interior and exterior details of the building.

Kebony Clear was specified for the louvers. Professor Rocco Ceo, who designed the project, points to the material's uniformity, density and ease of working — three decisive qualities for repetitive elements made by students. He also notes that the way the modified wood is produced matches the environmental criteria the programme aims to pass on.
