Barangaroo House, a charred timber restaurant in Sydney

In the regenerated Barangaroo South district, on the edge of Sydney harbour, the Barangaroo House restaurant is one of the first Australian projects to use charred Accoya as cladding. Designed by the practice Collins and Turner for the client Lendlease, the organically shaped building rises over three levels of terraces surrounded by hanging planters growing native herbs and fruits used in the kitchen. Supplied by Britton Timbers, the Accoya was cut into 45 mm battens, charred using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, oiled with an anthracite WOCA finish and then fixed to bespoke aluminium supports. Faced with Australian sun, wind and salt air, Accoya was chosen for its 50-year guarantee above ground, its dimensional stability and its class 1 durability. The project is part of the first district in the world aiming for carbon neutrality, where the Cradle to Cradle certification of Accoya made full sense. Completed in December 2017.
