Casa Angra: a 1980s coastal house reinvented with Accoya

On the coast of Angra dos Reis, in Brazil, Casa Angra is a 1980s holiday home entirely rethought by Studio Arthur Casas to become a contemporary residence open to the ocean and the lush vegetation. Completed in 2024, this full renovation uses Accoya wood, supplied by CORE Innovation in Wood, both outside and inside: mashrabiya screens providing shade, natural ventilation and privacy, facades, deck and roof elements exposed to the coastal climate, as well as floors and interior linings. Combined with local stone, thatch and glass, Accoya was chosen for its dimensional stability (three to four times less swelling than traditional timbers), its certified resistance to termites and its 50-year guarantee above ground, all ideal in a humid tropical climate. The project was recognised in 2025 by the DNA Paris Design Awards in the Architecture / Refurbishment category.
