Edmonton Funicular and Frederick G. Todd Lookout

The Edmonton Funicular, officially the 100 Street Funicular and Frederick G. Todd Lookout, opened in 2017 in the downtown core. Publicly funded at a cost of twenty-four million dollars, it makes the river valley — the city's largest public greenspace — accessible.

The cable-driven incline cabin takes mobility aids, bikes and strollers. A staircase runs alongside for those who prefer to walk. The installation continues into a promenade and a raised lookout with an unobstructed view of the valley, from which stairs and a lift descend the rest of the way.

The stairway has around one hundred and seventy steps built in Kebony modified wood. It incorporates built-in seating and a running lane parallel to the funicular track; concrete blocks provide seating on the other side. According to DIALOG, the practice behind the project, the materiality and overall form follow from the existing connective infrastructure of the river valley system.
