Four Winds, a house facing the sea in Ireland

At Sutton, on the east coast of Ireland facing Dublin Bay, the Four Winds house (200 m², completed in 2024) was designed by the architects Brennan Furlong on the basis of a 1940s bungalow. Conceived as an intergenerational sanctuary for the 3rd and 4th generations of one family, it is laid out in a cross around four raw concrete piers and two main beams, between wide panoramic openings onto the sea and an intimate inner patio. All the external joinery — windows and doors — is in Accoya wood, supplied by Fitzpatrick and Henry, chosen for its exceptional durability, its dimensional stability and its resistance to moisture in the coastal climate. Over time the wood develops a natural patina that strengthens the dialogue between the architecture and a landscape marked by 6,000 years of human history. Photographs by Fionn McCann.
