Morris Island Residence, Chatham

This single-family home on Morris Island, near Chatham, Massachusetts, was renovated and extended by Monte French Design Studio. The owners, a family of four, wanted more living space and a more contemporary appearance for the building.

The exterior works include Kebony Clear cladding on the altered volumes. The timber facade ties the additions visually to the original structure, a 1950s house whose logic and proportions the scheme retains.

Close to Cape Cod, the building is exposed to a maritime climate of humidity, wind and salt spray. Kebony modified wood, impregnated with a bio-based liquid, offers high dimensional stability and durability there with no finish to reapply, and greys evenly over time. Construction was carried out by Haycon, Inc.
