NEN building in Madrid

For the renovation of the NEN building in Madrid, built in 1967 in a district that was originally industrial and has become residential, Accoya wood was paired with steel, two materials emblematic of the history of the place. The facade was reorganised by the architecture practice ADOM-STUDIO: a steel lattice at the base of the building extends vertically to frame the openings, creating an effect of depth accentuated by the Accoya cladding. The modified wood brings warmth and continuity to the sustainable architecture of the new quarter, while guaranteeing class 1 durability and a 50-year guarantee above ground. Inside, Accoya boards clad the ceilings, echoing the metal lattices of the ground floor, and an Accoya dado ensures continuity between inside and out. Photographs: Jesús Granada.
