Renovation of Broadway Market in Baltimore

In Baltimore, in the United States, one of the six traditional markets remaining in the city was renovated in 2019. Broadway Market, whose heritage goes back to 1786 and which is among the oldest buildings in the city, has been given a new exterior finish: premium grooved Accoya cladding, charred in the Japanese carbonisation tradition. The market now presents a magnificent, clean black facade that continues the history of the place while giving it a resolutely contemporary identity. The renovation was designed by the Baltimore architecture practice PI.KL Studio. The Accoya was supplied by ReSAWN Timber, an American company specialising in charring Accoya wood (shou sugi ban), combining the carbonised look with the exceptional durability of modified timber.
