The MahaSamutr project in South-East Asia

MahaSamutr, “the ocean” in Thai, is a luxury development built in 2016 at Hua Hin around the first artificial lagoon in Asia and its private beach. Designed by the celebrated Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and built by Thai Obayashi, the scheme comprises 88 luxury villas, the first private country club in Hua Hin, a sports complex and a boat house. More than 500 m³ of pale Accoya wood were used for the wall linings and fences of the villas, the landscaping of the outdoor spaces and the decks encircling the lagoon, giving the place its tropical character. Rated durability class 1 and use class 4, Accoya was chosen for its performance in damp conditions, its absence of toxicity in contact with water, its carbon-neutral footprint and its Cradle to Cradle Gold certification, as an ecological alternative to tropical hardwoods.
