Tommy Bahama Waikiki, Honolulu

The Tommy Bahama Restaurant, Bar & Store in Waikiki, on the island of Oahu, opened in late October 2015. It occupies a three-storey building: retail on the ground floor, dining on the first floor, a rooftop bar and lounge above.

Kebony Clear was used as flooring in the restaurant and the rooftop lounge, and for the treads of the spiral staircase that connects the two levels.

On a curved staircase, each tread is a unique piece, cut and fitted individually: the consistent density and dimensional stability of the modified wood allow crisp arrises and even gaps between elements. On the roof, the material is directly exposed to solar radiation and Pacific salt spray, conditions under which it stays flat with no finish to reapply.
