Zilker deck, Austin

This residential project in the Zilker neighbourhood of Austin turns a back garden into an outdoor living space. The house opens onto it through wide, brightly lit windows, which called for visual continuity between the interior floor and the decking.

FIA Homes installed Kebony Clear decking boards on Step-Clip hidden fasteners. The absence of visible screws and the regular setting-out reinforce the sense that the living rooms extend outdoors.

Kebony modified wood gives the scheme a long service life with no finish to reapply, an important point in the Texas climate, where alternating intense heat and sustained rainfall tests conventional decking. The material weathers to a silver-grey patina if left unprotected.
