Based in Blanquefort, in the Gironde, the group was born in 1993 under the impetus of Olivier Fahy, who remains its Chairman-CEO and majority shareholder today. The company, whose origins go back to the company Sarpap founded in 1964, was structured through successive acquisitions (Lixol in 2017, the Xylophène business bought from PPG, Eurolyo in 2018, Biopress more recently), before merging its main subsidiaries in 2023 — including Adkalis, a historic wood-treatment specialist — into the parent company. The group employs around 200 staff across its head office and five industrial sites in France and Spain, and has been listed on Euronext Growth Paris since December 2021 (ALKEM). Groupe Berkem's core business is the formulation of bio-based solutions from two historic areas of expertise, plant extraction and chemical formulation, for four markets: Construction & Materials, Hygiene & Protection, Health-Beauty & Nutrition, and Industry. In the construction market, the group serves sawyers, carpenters, joiners and manufacturers of panels or pallets, as well as maintenance-and-renovation craftsmen. The wood-dedicated range covers preservation (anti-blue-stain products, finishes, insecticides and fungicides, anti-termite treatments, fire-retardant solutions) and the maintenance of exterior wood such as cladding, terraces and fencing, under the historic AXIL® brand. The group also offers solutions for protecting mineral materials (algicides, rising-damp treatment), resins for decorative and industrial paints, as well as treatment products for plant-fibre panels. Groupe Berkem claims 60 years of industrial know-how and frames its strategy within the decarbonization of construction, gradually substituting fossil raw materials with biomass-derived resources in its formulations.
