Log yard
Description
The Baljer & Zembrod butt reducer, or stump reducer, prepares the logs by milling out in a single pass the irregularities at the base of the trunk — roots, stumps, bumps — and reducing the butt to an even diameter. By removing the outgrowths (swellings, branch stubs, root flares), it makes the material flow more regular and eliminates most downstream processing problems, such as wane cuts at the saw. Rounding the butt in this way is a precondition for smooth conveying and for reliable feeding into the debarker and then into the sawing line. Placed at the head of the log yard, it makes the feeding and centring of the timber more reliable while improving material yield. It is aimed at sawmills handling logs with a heavy butt flare that want to regularise their infeed flow.
