Hardwood lumber (boules & slabs)
Description
Ekki (Lophira alata), of the Ochnaceae family, is a hardwood from tropical West Africa. Very heavy and very hard, its red brown heartwood darkens towards chocolate brown, sometimes purplish, with characteristic white deposits. The grain is most often interlocked or irregular and the texture coarse. Despite its hardness, it machines fairly readily; the interlocked grain calls for care, pre-drilling is necessary and corrosion-resistant fixings are recommended. Gluing is only possible with suitable modern adhesives. Its strength, its wear resistance and its durability (class 1-2) make it a construction timber widely used in hydraulic engineering and for exposed works. Callens African Woods offers it as hardwood sawn timber, through an FSC® supply chain.
