Hardwood lumber (boules & slabs)
Description
Sapele (Entandrophragma cylindricum), of the Meliaceae family, comes from West and Central Africa. Its heartwood, pink red turning to deep red brown, is distinct from a sapwood that can reach 60 to 80 mm. The grain is interlocked, sometimes wavy, hence a striped figure on quartered stock; the texture is medium coarse. It machines well by machine as by hand, with tools whose cutting edges have been treated; gluing is difficult in exterior joinery and a blue grey staining may appear in contact with iron. Of durability class 3, Sapele is used in solid form as well as in veneer and plywood for furniture, interior woodwork, musical instrument making and fit-out. Callens African Woods offers it as hardwood sawn timber, through an FSC® supply chain.
