Hardwood lumber (boules & slabs)
Description
Wenge (Millettia laurentii), of the Leguminosae family, comes from the Congo region. Freshly sawn, it is a light yellowish brown and then darkens quickly to dark brown in the light; the alternation of dark and light tissue produces a highly recognisable black and brown striped figure. The grain is straight to interlocked and the texture coarse. Machining is fairly good, but tools blunt quickly and the timber splits easily; splinters cause inflammation and good dust extraction is essential. Gluing is moderate and pre-drilling necessary; outdoors, a surface treatment is required because the extractives dissolve in water and may stain neighbouring materials. Of durability class 2, it is used for furniture, interior woodwork, stair treads and handrails, wood flooring and joinery. Callens African Woods offers it as hardwood sawn timber, through an FSC® supply chain.
