Wood and laminate are the most popular choices for living spaces because they are durable, elegant, and available in a variety of styles and finishes. How to choose the parquet flooring that suits you?

Maintaining a wood parquet floor is the same as for any other hardwood surface. Sweeping and dry cleaning with a microfiber mop should be done daily. Spills and wet stains should be blotted up with paper towels, then wiped with a damp washcloth. The floor should be cleaned about once a month using a specialized solution for wood parquet floors. Avoid using waxes, which can make floors slippery and damage the finish. Never use a steam mop on a wood parquet floor (or any other type of wood floor), as the wood could absorb moisture.

Modern wood parquet floors are often made of solid hardwood rather than veneers, and while it is possible to sand and refinish them, the process is complicated by the fact that the wood grain alternates and follows different directions. Major renovation work on these floors should be carried out by qualified specialists. Homeowners can refresh the surface by gently abrading it with a sanding screen, then applying a new coat of varnish.

What is the design of wood parquet flooring?

The multi-part composition of wood parquet tiles creates a rich, three-dimensional look that enhances the home. Future owners of your home may not share a taste for this style, and some potential buyers may consider it outdated and old-fashioned. Wood parquet fits well in mid-century modern homes but can seem out of place in other styles. However, if you are restoring or rebuilding an older home, wood parquet may be the best choice, depending on the period style you want to recreate.

How to install oak parquet?

Wood parquet tiles are much easier to install than hardwood floors, as they are glued rather than fastened to the subfloor. The 60-minute drying time of urethane-based adhesives gives you all the flexibility you need to install the tiles. Since they are fairly thin (about 5/16 of an inch), they are easy to cut using a jigsaw. Most wood parquet tiles are prefinished, which means the finished floor will not need to be stained or varnished.

However, due to the thinness of the tiles, it is essential that the floor is perfectly flat and durable. If the subfloor has any flex, the surface covering will noticeably deform underfoot. Because of the dramatic geometry of wood parquet patterns, care must be taken to ensure they are straight and symmetrical at the edges.

As a true wood floor covering, wood parquet performs best when installed at grade level or above. Basements or slab foundations are not recommended unless an intermediate subfloor is used. In addition, due to the many gaps between the pieces, it is not recommended to install wood parquet in damp or wet areas, such as bathrooms.
