What are the main types of woodworking machinery?

Woodworking machines are used to cut, size, machine, profile, assemble or finish sawn timber, panels and prepared components.

The right machine therefore depends above all on the operation to be performed and the product you want to make.

For cutting and stock preparation, see the stationary saws and the thicknessers and planers.

For profiling and joint preparation, see the spindle moulders, the moulders and the tenoners and mortisers.

For automated machining, CNC machines can perform a range of operations depending on their configuration.

For edge banding, see the edgebanders.

For pressing, gluing and some assembly work, see the presses.

For surface preparation and finishing, see the sanders and the finishing and surface treatment equipment.

To combine several operations on a single machine, see the combination machines.

For timber construction applications, see the timber framing and CLT processing machines and the timber frame prefabrication equipment.

The workshop waste shredders reduce by-products and production waste. Dust extraction and air filtration systems capture or treat the dust, shavings and other particles generated during processing.

What is the difference between primary and secondary wood processing?

Primary processing converts logs into sawn timber, while secondary processing turns that sawn timber and panels into parts or components for joinery, furniture, interior fit-out or timber construction.

Sawmill machinery is used mainly in sawmills to prepare the raw material. Secondary processing then takes place in workshops and production plants that work sawn timber, panels or other prepared components.

The process depends on the product. A solid wood component may be cut to length, surface-planed and thicknessed, then profiled or machined before assembly and finishing. For panels, the steps can include sizing, CNC machining, edge banding, sanding and surface finishing.

Who uses woodworking machinery?

These machines are used by joinery workshops, cabinetmakers, interior fit-out contractors, furniture and joinery manufacturers, timber framing and timber construction firms, and a wide range of industrial processing plants.

The equipment needed depends on the business. A panel furniture manufacturer may prioritise sawing, CNC machining and edge banding, while a joinery workshop working mainly in solid wood will rely more on planing, profiling and dedicated jointing machines.

Timber framing and timber construction firms, meanwhile, need solutions for machining beams and CLT panels or prefabricating building components.

How do you choose woodworking machinery?

The choice depends first on the operations to be performed, the materials processed, workpiece dimensions, required output and the level of automation you need.

Next, compare the capabilities specific to each machine family. Working width, maximum workpiece size, power, feed speed, number of axes and adjustment options matter to different degrees depending on the machine.

How production is organised also matters. A standalone machine can meet a specific need in a workshop, whereas higher-volume production may call for several machines integrated into a single line. Handling and lifting equipment can then make it easier to move components and materials between workstations.

It is not only about the machines themselves. Your tooling and consumables must also be matched to the machines, the materials processed and the operations performed.

How do you compare machines on WoodPartners?

Start by identifying the operation you need to perform, then go to the corresponding machine family. The filters and specifications available let you compare machines by workpiece, material, output and production set-up.

WoodPartners takes you from an operational need to a shortlist of machines and specialist manufacturers. Depending on your project, you can also complete your set-up with handling and lifting equipment or tooling and consumables.
