A public outdoor pool terrace at Schachen, Switzerland

Accoya wood surrounds the public outdoor pool (Freibad) at Schachen, Switzerland. This vast timber sun terrace had to cope with the full range of the Alpine climate: snow, ice and well below-freezing temperatures in winter, hot summer days with heavy use of the pool. Thanks to its exceptional dimensional stability, its resistance to rot and its low heat absorption — pleasant for bathers’ bare feet — Accoya was the obvious solution for this public aquatic space. The boards are fitted with concealed fixings on a structure also in Accoya, set on adjustable feet. The surface, simply sanded and left untreated, will develop an elegant silver-grey patina over time. The project was carried out by SPA and the timber supplied by Brunner Zimmerei Holzbau.
