Accoya bridge at Prague Zoo

At the heart of Prague Zoo, in a tropical setting where exotic plant species thrive, an Accoya timber bridge lets visitors cross the water in a hot, extremely humid atmosphere. The species previously used for the structure, such as oak, rotted very quickly, mainly between the decking and the substructure. Looking for a replacement material, the zoo management chose Accoya for its structural strength, its exceptional dimensional stability and its ability to overcome the durability problems. The Czech supplier Totem was responsible for the project. Installed for three years at the time of the report, the bridge has performed perfectly despite the permanent tropical humidity, demonstrating how well acetylated wood suits crossings and decking continuously exposed to water and condensation.
