Cabin in the Kragerø archipelago, Skåtøy

This holiday home was built in 2019 in the Kragerø archipelago, on the island of Skåtøy, by Charlotte Thiis-Evensen and Eivind Buene.

The starting point was difficult: the cabin they bought was in very poor condition and needed extensive work. The area was also subject to a residency obligation, which the owners succeeded in having lifted after several attempts, before the project could begin.

They appointed Atelier Oslo for the design. One constraint that emerged early was the maximum permitted gross floor area of 70 square metres, which shaped the whole architectural approach.

The facades are clad in Kebony Character. The Character grade retains visible knots, giving a natural texture in keeping with the island setting, while the modified wood withstands marine exposure over the long term with no finish to reapply. Photography: Ivar Kvaal.
