Computer Science Department deck, UCLA, Los Angeles

This deck was built around the Computer Science Department building at the University of California, Los Angeles. The scheme complements the campus's existing hard landscaping and walkways, and creates seating areas students can use between classes.

The decking boards are Kebony Clear. The choice answers the constraints of a university setting: dense, continuous footfall, strong solar exposure year round, and no possibility of closing the area for regular maintenance. Kebony modified wood requires no finish to reapply and stays flat through repeated wetting and drying cycles.

The material also offers a cooler surface in high heat, less reflective than the neighbouring hard paving. The project was designed by The Olin Studio.
