Hammerfest Cabin

The Hammerfest cabin is one of a network of hiking shelters built in the Norwegian mountains by the national trekking association. These isolated structures make routes accessible to walkers of widely differing ability, offering a sheltered stopping point on exposed itineraries.

The envelope is made of hexagonal panels clad in Kebony Character. The faceted setting-out gives the volume a geometry that reduces wind loading, while a large window frames the landscape from inside the shelter.

Kebony modified wood was selected for its resistance to wear and weathering in a subarctic climate, on a building that remoteness makes hard to maintain. The Character grade, with its visible knots, brings a textured appearance in keeping with the mountain setting. Design: SPINN Arkitekter with Format Engineers. Client: Norwegian Trekking Association.
