House on the Pond, Austin, Quebec

Set on the shore of a family lake in Austin, Quebec, House on the Pond is a compact, dual-season pavilion designed by Atelier Échelle. It works as a flexible retreat for four and doubles as a guest house when needed.

Conceived as a jewel box, the building unfolds across a series of terraces: it opens up in summer and retracts into intimacy in the colder months. The plan alternates private interior volumes with outdoor spaces, balancing solitude with hospitality.

Kebony modified wood is used for the exterior cladding and the decks, in 25 x 150 mm rough sawn boards. It brings the warmth and durability expected within the rustic vernacular of the site. Its resilience and low maintenance suit lakeside exposure in a climate of pronounced freeze cycles. Photography: Maxime Brouillet.
