Lidl Zero: a CO2-neutral store

At Almere, in the Netherlands, the Lidl Zero supermarket stands out as an icon of sustainable retail construction: a CO2-neutral store whose facade redefines the environmental standards of the sector. Designed by Bureau Ursum for Lidl Netherlands and built by CNSTRCT Building and Beyond, the building is clad in Accoya charred by the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban process, supplied by ZwartHout. The carbon layer gives depth and texture to the facade, which takes on a silvery glow in the sun, like a dance between light and shadow. Remarkably, this wood has no additional protective coating, yet it stays preserved and maintenance-free, saving natural resources.
