Pier 26 at Hudson River Park, New York

Pier 26 at Hudson River Park is a public park devoted to river ecology, built on a pier on the west side of Manhattan. It includes an engineered marsh, the Tide Deck, set on a concrete platform where arranged boulders recreate tidal pools. The pier juxtaposes several habitats and several levels, from the water surface to raised terraces, and will eventually house an estuarium education centre and a playground.

The walkways are decked in Kebony modified wood. The material was selected for its resistance to a demanding maritime environment — spray, tidal range, constant ultraviolet exposure — and for the environmental ambition of the scheme, the design team having made material durability a design criterion.

The park was designed by OLIN Studio for Hudson River Park. Landscape works were carried out by Steven Dubner Landscaping and Landscape Forms Inc.
