SILT: a sustainable building on the coast with Accoya

On the Belgian coast, at Middelkerke, the SILT building houses a hotel and a casino behind a spectacular Accoya timber facade. Standing 25 metres high and covering 39,200 m², the building, whose design was inspired by a mooring bollard, is visible along the whole coast from Ostend to Westende. Designed by the practices ZJA, OZ, DELVA and Bureau Bouwtechniek, it was built by Furnibo and Democo, with HESS TIMBER for the timber structures: 3,060 m of Accoya beams, that is 1,314 laminated timber components representing 115 m³, made by HASSLACHER and installed with Arwo Bouw. Accoya was the obvious choice for its exceptional resistance to salt and moisture (durability class 1, guaranteed for up to 50 years out of ground contact) and its FSC and Cradle to Cradle Gold certifications. Prefabrication and the light weight of the components allowed this complex project to be completed in just a year.
