Theatre Squared, Fayetteville

Theatre Squared is a professional theatre in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The building brings together two auditoriums, a rehearsal space, offices, a community theatre education space, and workshops and stores for scenery and costumes. Apartments for guest artists are integrated into the scheme, which is completed by outdoor terraces and a café-bar.

The design made resource efficiency an explicit objective, with substantial use of repurposed materials. The exterior envelope combines board-formed concrete cast against Arkansas pine with Kebony modified wood cladding.

The timber facade was given a Shou Sugi Ban treatment, the Japanese charring technique, carried out here by Delta Millworks. Charring produces a textured black surface and reinforces the protection of timber on an exposed elevation. Design: Marvel Architects with Charcoalblue. Main contractor: Baldwin & Shell.
