West Woodland deck, Seattle

This deck was built in the back garden of a house in the West Woodland neighbourhood of Seattle. The handrails set it apart: Noble Woodworks curved the top rail along its full length and fitted each junction without visible tolerance, giving the whole the character of bespoke joinery rather than standard decking.

Decking and railing components are in Kebony Clear. The modified wood suits this kind of work: its density and consistency allow fine machining, crisp arrises and tight tolerances without fibre tear-out.

In Seattle, where rainfall is frequent and relative humidity high for much of the year, the material's stability limits movement and extends the life of the structure with no finish to reapply. Supply: Green Home Solutions.
