What is chestnut cladding?

Chestnut cladding is an exterior wood covering for buildings (facades, walls, low walls, etc.). Chestnut is a close-grained wood commonly used for standard or open-joint cladding thanks to its natural durability and weather resistance. Chestnut cladding is often used to protect and decorate the exterior walls of houses, barns, chalets and other structures (balconies, saunas, etc.).

It is best known for its high weather resistance.

What types of chestnut cladding are available?

There are several variations of chestnut cladding depending on how the wood is treated and cut: 

  • Untreated chestnut cladding: usually made of untreated chestnut boards. It has a rustic, natural and very attractive look, but it weathers and therefore requires regular maintenance.

  • Pressure-treated chestnut cladding: chemically treated to resist rot, insects and mould. More resistant than untreated chestnut, it needs less maintenance.

  • Open-joint, horizontal and vertical chestnut cladding: the standard installation variations all apply to chestnut cladding. 

How much does chestnut cladding cost?

The price per m² of chestnut cladding varies with several factors, including wood grade, chestnut variety, treatment, board dimensions and the region the wood comes from. 

It is generally more affordable than tropical hardwoods.
