Bio-based insulation: overview and uses
Bio-based insulation is made from plant materials: wood fibre, wood wool, hemp, cellulose, cork, straw. As well as keeping out the cold, it provides good protection against summer heat and keeps walls breathable.
Key selection criteria
- Insulation type: wood fibre, hemp, cellulose, cork…
- Thermal resistance R (the higher, the better) and thermal conductivity (lambda).
- Phase shift: the time summer heat takes to pass through the wall, a strength of dense wood-fibre boards.
- Format (rigid or flexible board, roll, loose fill) and reaction to fire (Euroclass).
